NEW PHOTO's  Li 150 Series 2 'Turning Mudguard' (Eibar - Spanish Built)  -  £1200

1961 Spanish built Li 150 series 2 with factory fitted front turning mudguard. Rare machine and in fantastic original condition. Perhaps use 'as-is' or the basis of a very easy restoration project.

For originality they don't come much better than on this example. Engine kicks over and sparks (so should run). Everything correct with matching frame and engine numbers. Comes with an LCGB dating certificate and full advice on UK registration.

What model is this?

A Spanish Series 2 model is a rare and unusual variant of the more common Italian Series 2 machines.

Introduced in late 1961, the Spanish Series 2 replaced the successful (in Spain) LD model. Not content with just copying the Italian models, the Spanish re-designed the Series 2 to include many design characteristics from the LD (colour schemes, turning front mudguard etc). The result is probably one of the most unusual Lambretta models ever produced and arguably a better looking version than the much more common Italian variant.

There are actually 3 variants to the Spanish series 2’s. Early models use many Series 1 parts. Mid models are more like the Italian series 2. Whilst later models feature a redesigned headset and often known as ‘Winter’ models. Spanish S2’s normally have matching frame and engine numbers, however very early versions occasionally do not. A TV175 version was also available but these are very rare and difficult to find (even in Spain).

Over 50,000 Series 2’s were produced in Spain between 1961 and 1964. The most common model being the 150cc version. Relatively few 125cc versions were produced and the 175cc TV numbers less than 2500 in total.

History of Spanish built Lambretta's

Lambreta’s were first introduced into Spain in the early 1950’s. These machines were Innocenti models. Production of Lambretta in Spain began in 1954 by Lambretta Locomociones in the town of ‘Eibar’.

All early models were locally produced copies of Italian models – all were badged as ‘Eibar’ (rather than Innocenti).

Following the demise of the Innocenti factory, the Spanish were forced to reorganise their Lambretta production. In late 1973 they renamed themselves ‘Serveta’.

Production of Lambretta in Spain continued until approximately 1987, when the factory finally folded. Towards the end, production was in small batches and had split across two sites.

Spanish produced Lambretta’s are generally regarded to be equal (or even higher) quality than their Italian equivalent models. It was no accident that Innocenti allowed the Eibar factory to produce the 3 millionth Lambretta in the world in 1964.

Generally all ‘Eibar’ badged models are as good as an Innocenti produced machine. Plus most parts are inter-changeable between Italian and Spanish machines.

As production carried on into the 1980’s ‘Serveta’s’ did pick up a bad reputation for their poor electrics – however in all other aspects they were much better than the equivalent Indian produced models.

Why buy this model?

A Spanish Series 2 is a unique and unusual version of the Lambretta. They are well made and relatively easy to restore. They appeal to both collectors and customisers.

The Spanish S2 was not officially imported into the UK and so all the examples that you see today have been imported in recent years. I don’t know the exact figures but I doubt that there are more than a couple of hundred examples in the whole of the UK. Compare this with the thousands of Innocenti examples that have survived, then these machines will never be a common site at scooter shows/rally’s.

Spanish S2’s are also proving harder to find in Spain itself. The Spanish have woken up to their own Lambretta heritage and so prices are climbing. Imports into the UK are drying up and at this time we seem to be the only business in the UK with this model currently in stock.
